In Utah, about 100 Timpview High School band students raised enough money to send themselves, two local Pearl Harbor veterans and their wives to Hawaii, says Dave Fullmer, director of bands.

The students spent 14 months preparing for the trip by memorizing music and taking history courses — all outside of school, Fullmer says.

"It was a sacrifice for them, but it was important to me that they knew why they were going," Fullmer says.

Timpview head coach Louis Wong has a knack for taking positives out of losses and looking on the bright side of things. Following Thursday's 24-10 semifinals loss to East he was remarkably upbeat and looking forward.
